So, grab a cup of something nice, and let's dive into my top 5 books to end 2023 that are like life's personal trainers!
"Atomic Habits" by James Clear
This isn't just a book; it's a life-hack manual. I picked up this book in February 2023 and revisited it this fall as I was developing a new routines, habits, and building a new schedule.
The book serves up a feast of wisdom on how tiny habit tweaks lead to monumental life changes. Are you familiar with “habit-stacking?” Think of it as the Domino Effect in action – one small habit change triggers a cascade of awesomeness.
This book is packed with real-life stories, scientific insights, and practical strategies that are as easy to digest and packed with tools for you to improve your life!
“Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki
Kiyosaki’s book is the financial myth-buster we all needed. Seriously, he got me to stop thinking of my house as an investment, made me consider what is in my “asset column,” and this text has motivated me to start creating content, digital downloads, and build up this website. What was I doing over the past decade?
The book contrasts the financial philosophies of his two dads, giving us the ultimate showdown of conventional vs. entrepreneurial wisdom. Fun fact, “Poor Dad” is a college professor (just like me). The message addresses that it’s not just about making money; it's about making your money work smartly for you. Think of it as the gym for your financial muscles – time to bulk up!
If you’re rethinking your finances and approach to life, this is a must-read! What items make up your asset column?
"The Courage to Be Disliked" by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
Did you see me post about this on Instagram? It’s one of those books that you can put down and it’s inspired me to take action toward my goals. Your past doesn’t dictate your future!
If you ever feel like a contortionist trying to fit into everyone's liking, this book throws that out the window. It’s a refreshing dialogue-based read that introduces Adlerian psychology – a less-known but fascinating approach to understanding ourselves and others. It’s like having a heart-to-heart with a wise philosopher who says it’s cool to march to the beat of your own drum.
100-percent recommend, and I’m suggesting this text as a Common Read option at Onondaga Community College.
"The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg
This is another book that I started when I was considering building-up my personal brand around habits. Duhigg is like the Sherlock Holmes of habits. He takes you on an investigative journey to unravel why we do what we do and how to transform our habits.
The book is a blend of enthralling storytelling and neuroscience, and there are so many examples that make you ponder your “cues,” “routines,” and “rewards.” It's as gripping as a mystery novel, with each chapter revealing another piece of the puzzle of our behavior.
I just love the explanation on how Febreze became a hit!
"How to Stay In Love" by James Sexton
If love stories had a behind-the-scenes, this would be it. As a divorce lawyer, Sexton has seen it all. He packs this book with insights on what makes relationships last (and what doesn't). It's candid, unexpectedly humorous, and filled with practical advice, like a trusted friend who tells you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.
Ironic that I’m reading this now, especially since I just ended a relationship…
Nonetheless, Sexton emphasizes the importance of proactive communication, advising couples to address issues directly and honestly before they escalate. He suggests practical strategies like setting aside regular times for check-ins and discussions, ensuring both partners feel heard and valued.
The book also delves into the significance of understanding and respecting each other's love languages. Sexton highlights that what makes one partner feel loved might be different for the other, and recognizing these differences is key to showing affection effectively and fostering a deeper emotional connection.

Whether you're looking to tweak your habits, redefine your wealth strategy, or just keep the love boat sailing smoothly, these reads have got your back.
